The Muñatones castle in Muzkiz is surrounded by a substantive wall and presided over by a robust tower. This enclave is one of the great treasures of Biscay heritage, and one of those places that even makes an impression on people who think they know the region well.

Part of its strength lies in its origin. The castle was built during the 14th and 15th centuries against the background of the War of the Bands, a period marked by confrontations between Basque noble lines. Its defensive function can still be seen today in its architecture. It’s not a standard palace residence, rather it’s a fortress designed to resist and control its environment.

What makes this place especially attractive is that it has maintained a very clear appearance of medieval fortress. The main tower, the walled enclosure and the bulkiness of its volumes make the visit have a very different feel from other heritage sites in the territory.

In terms of an experience, Muñatones works very well as a plan that combines heritage, landscape and a feeling of discovery. It doesn’t have the massive silhouette like other more famous castles outside of Biscay, and that’s where part of its charm comes from. It offers a visit with a lot of personality, that is tightly bound to the territory and has a powerful history behind it. That opinion is a reasonable deduction given its unique heritage, its ties to the War of the Bands and the didactic approach highlighted by the provincial sources.

The Muñatones castle is, in short, one of those places that summarises the strength of the heritage of Biscay very well: history, character, defensive architecture and a location that invites you to look at the past with different eyes. It’s a must-see spot for anyone who enjoys discovering places that have their own identity and a lot of history behind them.

What makes the Muñatones castle special

  • It’s the only existent castle in Biscay, according to the provincial network of museums and heritage spaces.
  • It was built between the 14th and 15th centuries.
  • It’s directly linked to Lope García de Salazar, one of the key figures in the history of Biscay.
  • It has conserved a very potent appearance of a medieval fortress from the War of the Bands.
  • Your visit can be completed with the nearby El Pobal forge.
